precise, powerful movement. focused mind.

Now holding indoor/outdoor classes!

“Shaolin” is the name for a network of Buddhist and Daoist temples in ancient China that incorporated martial arts as part of their path of cultivation. This unique blend of practices is what defines the style.

This manifests as a precise movement practice that requires discipling the body, controlling our energy, and focusing the mind on the present moment, through both solo and partner work.

In general, the practice is to merge and harmonize all the different aspects of ourselves like body, awareness, energy, and intention.

At New Orleans Shaolin, we offer two programs for this traditional training:

Shaolin Kung Fu

A "hard-style" martial art trained through stances, forms ("katas"), traditional weapons, sparring, strength/cardio exercises, and self-defense work. Recommended for people looking to push the extremes of what their bodies can do in a fun, supportive atmosphere.

Tai Chi

A more gentle, internally-focused practice to open the joints, relieve chronic tension, and feel energy-flow. Recommended initially as a therapeutic health practice, or for meditation. Learn the Yang style 64-posture form and eventually more!

Watch the short video below to see how this type of training may look in classes!

WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING

Since starting my training there earlier this year, I’ve made a number of friends, become stronger mentally and physically, and am seeing positive effects from my Kung Fu practices manifest in other, unexpected parts of my life. On top of all this, it’s just incredibly fun and joyful. Everyone is SO NICE and down to earth. If you’re looking for a fulfilling new hobby in the New Orleans area, I can’t recommend this place enough.

For years I shied away from martial arts for fear of the competitive element and fear of personal injury (I'm a musician). However I found that the kung fu program at New Orleans Shaolin-Do is not geared toward competitive fighting, but more towards connection of the body, balance, strength building, and the traditional Shaolin forms. As well, we definitely learn a good deal of self-defense, fighting and sparing techniques in the program.

Great community for learning a martial art. Folks of all ages and abilities. Instructors are attentive, skilled, and excellent at imparting information.

Friendly, Supportive, Inclusive

We know martial arts can sometimes seem intimidating or macho, but at New Orleans Shaolin, we strive to make our studio a place where all people, especially those marginalized in broader society, can feel welcome and safe as they work to empower and cultivate themselves.
